Regardless of what student majors is at college, there are 4 things that every student should get from their college education. The first thing that usually comes to mind is the information gained from the courses in her major. While this is true, there are other things that are just as important if not more so.
- Critical thinking skills. As a college student advances through the courses in his major, she will be given real-world problems to solve. She will be given scenarios that she would experience in a real job setting. She will analyze and synthesize that knowledge. She will develop hypotheses and formulate solutions and test them out. She will evaluate the results and determine the effectiveness and appropriateness of her solutions. Critical thinking skills can be transferred to different situations regardless of the job a student may take.
- 2. Good communication skills. Throughout the time that it takes to get a college degree, students have the opportunity to make oral presentations before their classmates. They learn how to speak in front of groups and to concisely develop their communication skills. In addition to developing oral skills, students also develop their communication skills through writing. Writing good papers requires that a student be able to research material, organize appropriate content, and then write in a logical orderly manner.
- 3. Well-rounded knowledge. Many students moan when they have to take general education courses such as biology, philosophy, or humanities. They want to immediately get right into the courses for their major. However, the purpose of these general education courses is to develop students who have a well-rounded foundational knowledge about the world around them. Students gain a basic knowledge about these topics so they can intelligently discuss and understand them.
- 4. Content specific knowledge. In addition to the general requirements, students generally complete between sixty to seventy-five credit hours in the content area of their major. This knowledge helps a student to be successful when she gets a job after graduation. The deeper and wider a student’s knowledge and experience is in the content area, the better prepared she will be for the job market.
